For those who don’t know— Andrea Smith is a Native American woman and scholar in ethnic/gender studies. One of her main projects is the INCITE! collective.

This makes me think of Silvia Federici’s book, Caliban and the Witch (which I still need to finish), which talks about how the construction of patriarchy in Europe was a critical development in the formation of capitalism and “primitive accumulation.”

Statistics on sexual assault and suicide in Native communities aren’t something that you should flippantly throw around. Not to win an argument. Not even if you’re Native. Not even if you think you’re being supportive.
Those are real problems that certain communities actually, truly face. It’s really painful and infuriating to see them thrown around as some sort of gotcha in an internet argument.
I guess the same could be said for other issues that hit Native communities especially hard.

After browsing through the stat counter I have on this tumblr (and seeing some really horrific google searches bringing people here and a few other unsettling things) and remembering some stuff I’ve written and no longer agree with - I’m going through and deleting a lot of posts.

I see that any mention of blood quantum on here has a billion university hits and am really uncomfortable by that. I know a lot of people on tumblr browse through the internet their university provides and do so harmlessly, but I’m sure you can see how it still makes me uncomfortable, mainly because I’m paranoid. I also hate seeing people trawl through all my posts looking for any secrets I may have spilled about my culture or another tribe’s culture. The amount of searches for specific items by various tribes is ridiculous. Specific item that shows up more than any other: “Mohawk cradleboards”. So, all of those landing pages are getting deleted.

I’m so fucking irritated that people are googling shit like “native american indian girls on tumblr” “american indian squaw breed” and “native american women boobs”. I am so happy that I reblogged an amazing post by a Native woman on here about the sexualization of Native women and the harm that it does, and that these pervs keep landing there no matter how they phrase their searches.

I think I may be coming back to this tumblr soon. I am going to keep my personal posts on my other tumblr and use this for everything else.

I'm wondering what you think of responses to female appropriation of feather headdresses in contemporary fashion, along the lines of mycultureisnotatrend's: "Unfortunately if you’re a woman, you’re thumbing your nose at our culture which explicitly disallows you to wear the headdress." Do we have to excuse the sexism in the name of culture? Can't both be bad? I think we can do better.

You are trying to view a single part of a few tribes’ culture through the lens of western feminism. It doesn’t work like that. There were also women’s headdresses that men don’t wear. If you want to know more about this, there are plenty of resources out there on tumblr. You aren’t the first person to think out this kind of “ah ha, gotcha” response to being told you can’t wear a headdress.

I'm curious to see if you include Native Hawaiians in your idea of indigenous peoples, and would subsequently be included in your indigenous list, seeing as it /is/ rather Americas-centric.

Of course! Any indigenous people. Most of the people on the list are from the Americas, but not everyone! Included are some people who are Saami and Scottish Gael, Chamorro, Amazigh, Tuareg, Gnawi, and Romani.

They keep referring to Michael Laney as a “suspect,” when it reality, the only thing suspect about him is that he was riding a red scooter.

They’re simultaneously saying Michael Laney had his hands behind his back and that he was reaching for an officer’s gun (or his gun), which is physically impossible if your hands are behind your back.

Notice how all the media reports say that the officers thought Laney was reaching for a gun, but no one has mentioned whether or not he actually had a gun. You know why? Because he didn’t fucking have a gun. If he had one, that shit would be in the goddamn headline.

Most of the media is conveniently leaving out the whole part where after the cop shot Michael, the other cop yelled to him “What have you done?” They fucking knew right then they had used excessive force.

The media is bringing up Michael’s felony record for one reason: so that the police officers can be justified in murdering him.

The goddamn piece of shit police chief had the nerve to say “these officers feared for their lives.” Fuck you. Michael was running to his mother’s house. He feared for his life. You did not fear for your fucking life when you had him handcuffed, when you shot an unarmed, handcuffed man in the head.

Then, he had the nerve to say “the alternative is we could be talking about two dead cops right now.” This… this is what they think about us. The police chief of the Charlotte Mecklenberg Police Department has literally said “Yeah, a black man’s dead, but it’s way better than the alternative: a white cop being dead.”

God fucking damnit.

Unarmed black kid just got shot by the police in my neighborhood.
